Acupuncture is often considered for persistent back or neck pain, knee pain associated with osteoarthritis, and some headache concerns. NCCIH summarizes research supporting pain relief for several of these conditions. The consultation connects your symptoms, medical history and current care with an individualized treatment plan.
Traditional Chinese medicine describes treatment in terms of Qi and meridians. Biomedical research examines effects on the nervous system and pain processing. These are different explanatory frameworks; point selection and treatment goals are discussed in the context of your care.
When acupuncture and physical therapy are both appropriate, the team can help coordinate the appointments. Acupuncture and PT have different assessments and goals; a combined plan does not mean every patient needs both. See the physical therapy service and practitioner profiles for the relevant expertise and location.
SEE THE SERVICE
Fine needles are placed at selected points while you rest in a comfortable position. The points, positioning and stimulation are chosen for your individual plan. Some approaches include gentle manual stimulation or electrical stimulation.
Sensations can include a brief pinch, mild pressure or an aching feeling. Feedback during the session helps the practitioner adjust for comfort.
Traditional Chinese medicine organizes treatment around Qi, meridians and patterns of balance. These concepts provide a traditional framework for selecting points and understanding the person as a whole.
Modern research examines effects involving the nervous system, local tissues and pain processing. Studies support benefit for some pain conditions, including certain back, neck and knee concerns, although results vary by condition and individual.
The consultation considers your symptoms, current treatment, medicines and practical goals. A plan may also address sleep, activity and other everyday habits that relate to your wellbeing.
Progress is reviewed through changes in symptoms and activities that matter to you. Acupuncture can fit alongside appropriate medical care; fertility-related treatment remains coordinated with your reproductive-health specialist.

Share pregnancy, bleeding disorders, blood-thinning medicines and implanted electrical devices before treatment. Sterile, single-use needles are part of safe practice. Soreness, minor bleeding or bruising can occur; report unexpected symptoms promptly.
Research supports considering acupuncture for some chronic pain conditions. Your practitioner can help relate these findings to your symptoms and the medical care you already receive.
2018 · Individual-patient-data meta-analysis
Across 39 trials, acupuncture improved pain more than sham or no-acupuncture controls for the chronic pain conditions studied. Differences were smaller against sham treatment. Results concern the studied pain conditions, not every medical use of acupuncture.
2017 · Meta-analysis
The pooled analysis suggests that some pain-relief benefit can persist after a course of acupuncture. This draws on related chronic-pain trials, rather than an independent test of this clinic or an individual prognosis.
NCCIH patient information
NCCIH describes possible benefit for certain back, neck and osteoarthritis-related pain and some headache conditions. This patient guide also explains uncertainty and safety considerations; benefit depends on the condition.
Acupuncture is available at our Manhattan, Forest Hills in Queens and Great Neck offices.
The needles are very fine. A brief pinch, dull ache, heaviness or tingling may occur. Sensation varies between points and people; let your practitioner know about discomfort during the session.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing and have a light meal rather than arriving hungry or immediately after a large meal. Bring your medication list and relevant medical information, including pregnancy, bleeding concerns or implanted devices.
Frequency and the number of visits depend on your condition, goals and response. Your acupuncturist reviews progress and adjusts the plan; there is no single schedule that suits everyone.
Acupuncture and physical therapy may be planned as complementary appointments when appropriate. Each has its own assessment and treatment goals, and the team can coordinate relevant information.
Some plans include acupuncture benefits. Coverage depends on the plan, condition, provider and network. Send your insurance details to your selected office before the appointment so the team can check benefits.
Allow approximately 75 minutes for an initial acupuncture or physical therapy appointment. This is the initial appointment length, not the duration of every treatment or a combined visit. Confirm follow-up times and any additional same-day services with your chosen office.
Yes. The team can arrange these services on the same day, with the combination and sequence based on your symptoms and individual assessments. Contact your chosen office before booking to coordinate the separate appointment types, practitioners, total time and insurance or self-pay arrangements.
