Aromatherapy massage combines hands-on techniques with diluted essential oils or other aromatic products. Pressure can vary across the session, with the treatment area, fragrance preference and skin sensitivity considered before application.
The massage component may help with muscle tension and short-term comfort. Scent is part of the sensory experience; findings about massage alone do not establish the same effect for every essential oil. NCCIH provides an overview of massage research and appropriate use.

The massage component uses contact, pressure and movement over soft tissues. Pressure and technique are adjusted to the area of tension, your preferences and the goals of the session.
Aromatherapy adds essential-oil aromas or appropriately prepared topical products to that setting. The selection considers the product ingredients, your skin and fragrance tolerance.
Aromatic molecules are detected by the sense of smell, which connects with brain pathways involved in emotion and memory. Scent can therefore be part of the experience of comfort and relaxation.
The response to an aroma is personal. A scent that one person enjoys may be unpleasant or irritating to another, so comfort preferences are part of the treatment plan.
The visit begins with your priorities, health history and pressure preferences. A comfortable position is established before hands-on work begins, and feedback helps guide adjustments during the appointment.
The focus may be general relaxation or a selected area of tension. A fragrance-free massage is a separate option for people who prefer to avoid aromatic products.

2007 · Randomized controlled trial
The intervention was associated with short-term improvement in anxiety or depression symptoms in the cancer-care setting studied. The main longer-term benefit was not established. This is supportive symptom-care research, not treatment of cancer.
2022 · Randomized controlled trial
A small nursing-home trial reported improvements in anxiety and depression scores after a course of aromatherapy massage. The sample and setting were limited. It does not establish that the same result applies to all older adults or replaces mental-health care.
2012 · Randomized controlled trial
Massage and aromatherapy massage reduced reported menopausal symptoms in the women studied. The study concerns a defined course of treatment in postmenopausal women; results do not prove that any scent or massage protocol has the same effect.
